BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport Kicks Off Week-Long Summer Youth Initiative

Starting August 10th, 50 Baltimore City students participated in the week-long Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Summer Youth Initiative. This program was created to provide students with the unique opportunity to learn about aviation and the wide range of career opportunities related to transportation.

“This important initiative was created to inspire these students and to expose them to leaders in the transportation industry,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “We want to provide these young minds with the opportunity to experience the inner-workings of a major international airport. We hope to engage the students and capture their imaginations as they think about possible careers in commercial aviation.”

Participants in the BWI Marshall Airport Summer Youth Initiative come from five Baltimore City recreation centers. Throughout the week, the students will be immersed in the day-to-day operation of BWI Marshall Airport. The program will be activity-driven, with specific sessions to include airport management, airline operations, aviation security, transportation logistics, the hospitality industry, and business. Program instructors and leaders will offer their knowledge and experience during the program while emphasizing the importance of education, hard work, and discipline.

“BWI Marshall Airport is a gateway to the world for residents and businesses throughout Maryland,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn. “This program will help support and encourage these students to consider future careers in transportation.”

The BWI Marshall Airport Summer Youth Initiative is supported by a number of important partners and sponsors, including: the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, Southwest Airlines, the Transportation Security Administration, the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, AIRMALL, First Transit, the BWI Business Partnership, the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Federal Air Marshal Service.
