Check for loose change!
WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — Make sure to grab your loose change while traveling through airport security. Otherwise, it mind end up in the growing pile of unclaimed money.
The Transportation Safety Authority says they collected nearly $675,000 in loose change left behind at security checkpoints in 2014.
This is the most money in loose change the TSA has collected over the last five years, and a dramatic increase from the nearly $410,000 collected in 2010.
The TSA says the money is usually left at the bottom of the bins that pass through the airport security x-rays.
D.C. area travelers are some of the most forgetful with their change. The TSA says they collected about $22,000 in change from Washington-Dulles International Airport, the eighth most from any airport in 2014. Travelers at Ronald Reagan National Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport left behind about $9,590 and $8,470 in 2014 respectively.
Congress gave the TSA the authority to collect unclaimed money at checkpoints for security reasons.
